World Class Cities for All in West Bengal

NASVI has been successfully organizing the “World Class Cities for All” campaign in West Bengal since January 2010. The campaign started remarkably on National Hawkers Day (20January, 2010) with a mass meeting at Metro Channel in Kolkatta. The mass meeting turned out be successful in terms of participation and uniting hawkers associations under NASVI. With strong support from hawkers of Kolkatta, NASVI decided to a month long mobile campaign “Jago Re Banglar Hawker Mobile Campaign’ in all parts of West Bengal to create awareness on the National Policy for street vendors and to pressurize the State Government to formulate of state policy on street vendors.
 
Press Conference  
NASVI organized a press conference at Kolkatta Press Club on21st February, 2010 in association with Jai Hind Calcutta Hawkers’ Union, Dr. J.P.Welfare Research and Education and All India Railway Hawkers Association to brief the activities of mobile campaign. Mr. Moulana Qari Mufti Alhaj S.M. Noorur Rahman barkati Mojeddadi, Shahi Imam-o-Khatib, Tupu Sultan Masjid, Mr. Ramen Pandey, President, Jai Hind Kolkatta Hawkers’ Union, Idris Ali, Advocate, Mr. Sk.Md. Siddik, President-All India Railway Hawkers Association, West Bengal were also present in  the press conference.
 
Flag Off of the mobile campaign
The Jago re Banglar Hawkers Mobile Campaign was flagged off on 22nd of February 2010 at Metro Channel at 2:00 p.m. (Esplanade/Dharmatalla, Kolkatta). 
 
Objectives
a.       To make hawkers aware about the National Policy on Street Vendors, adopted by the Government of India
b.       To make aware of the hawkers about failure of West Bengal government in formulation of state policy on street vendors.
c.       To formulate a National Policy on Railway Hawkers by the Central Government and the Railway Ministry
d.       Issue of photo/Identity card/recognition of street hawkers and extension of social security benefits
e.       To pressurize upon the State Government to extend benefits of the Central Government schemes i.e. Swarna Jayanti Shahri Rojgar Yojna. Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, Skill Development Initiative, Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, National Social Assistance Program and other welfare schemes.
f.        To unite hawkers unions/associations under NASVI
g.       To form a State Coordination Committee of NASVI with representatives from hawkers union/associations in West Bengal in order to create strong networking and organization for the benefits of the hawkers and NASVI.
 
Demands
Ø      Formulation of State Policy on Hawkers.
Ø      Issue of Photo Identity Card to street vendors
Ø      Coverage under Social Security Net like ESI, PF etc.,
Ø      Low interest Bank Loans for Hawkers
Ø      Free Education for Children of Hawkers
Ø      Formulation of National Policy on Railway Hawkers
