Street vendors as a group belong to the unorganized sector of the economy. As such they do not have access to many Government-assisted social security schemes. However, in some States, social security schemes such as Old Age Pension and Other benefits are being provided through the welfare boards and similar bodies.
The Government of Tamil Nadu is ordered to set up Tamil Nadu Petty Shop & Street Vending Workers Board on 9th February 2010. The welfare board will help 10 lakh street vendors in Tamil Nadu. Interestingly, Tamil Nadu is the first state to set up a separate welfare board for street vendors in India. This is considered to be a major initiative of Government of Tamil Nadu for the welfare of street vendors.
NASVI also nominated the two eminent social activists, who are actively struggling for street vendor’s rights as members of Tamil Nadu Petty Shop & Street Vending Workers Board as per the suggestion of Principal Secretary, Labour and Employment,Tamilnadu.
